#5 New York

On the cost-of-living index, the cost of housing in New York is an absolutely staggering 230.1, with the national baseline set at 100.0. Healthcare is just slightly over average, and utilities are a little below, yet everything else in New York is more expensive.

With its high living costs, you’ll need a significant nest egg to retire in New York. Housing and rent are ridiculously expensive, with the median house price exceeding $746,000.

According to the state website, nursing home care can range from $264 per day in Central New York to $308 per day in the Rochester region, with costs rising as you move downstate.

Another downside of living here is that there are no calming green areas or slow-paced lifestyle options in the crowded and noisy New York. As a result, if you want to live a calm life, this is certainly not the best place for you to retire.
