1. The checklist

First of all, if you want to make your home safer as you age, you need to know what you have to change. The AARP has a great list named “Checklist for Aging in Place,” and we found it incredibly useful.

The manual suggests beginning small by lowering bookcases and elevating toilet heights to reduce bending over and eliminate the need for a step stool. Also, since you don’t want to suffer accidents, make sure that the lighting in places such as the kitchen or the bathroom is as good as possible. This can help you avoid slipping on spilled liquids.

Your bed should be accessible. This means you can get in and get out without effort. If needed, you can use raisers. Some slide-out drawers in your cabinets can help you access them much easier.

Eliminate electrical cables from walkways. Throw away any slippery rugs because they can be extremely dangerous. Also, if you think it is necessary, you can lower all of your sinks.

As you can see, there are many changes and adjustments you can make. If you want to make them yourself, consult the online guides, and if you find it difficult, you can talk with an expert anytime.
