Ohio

Why is this state on our list of the best retirement destinations in the Midwest?

Columbus

The biggest city in the Buckeye State comes with some of the most minor costs. And housing is exceptionally affordable: According to statistics, the average home value here is only about $157,500, compared with the national average of $229,00.

But don’t worry: low costs don’t equate to a shortage of activities. Locals home to Ohio State University can enjoy the co-ed culture, including significant concerts, sporting events, and cultural diversions.

It also offers Program 60, which allows Ohio residents aged 60 and older to take university courses for free. But off-campus, the downtown area is the place to be.

It has a lively scene with an eclectic mix of galleries, shops, and restaurants. We particularly recommend exploring the Short North and German Village neighborhoods.

Orange

As an affluent suburb of Cleveland, Orange is the birthplace of President James A. Garfield. The town strongly emphasizes community, as shown by its public events, ranging from outdoor concerts and movie nights to holiday fests and fireworks shows.

Locals can also enjoy over 60 acres of public parks with everything from greens to walking trails and beautiful community gardens.
