#6 Consider relocating to make most of the security check

It’s not hard math: if you live in a place with a lower cost of living, then your Social Security check is both going to last you longer and also be able to cover more things. It’s easy to stretch it longer if you don’t live in an expensive location, so maybe you should truly give relocating a hard thought. The hard truth is that some states are more friendly for retirees on a budget than others.

Some places we suggest would be Reno, Nevada, or Tucson, Arizona. They do check off the low cost of living there but also benefit from having warmer weather, which might be good if you have certain health issues. Do some calculations, because maybe packing your bags is the best choice for you!

I paid in close to the limit of social security for much of my life. Yes I took social security at 62 but my checks are less than $900 a month as it would not make my house payment. Thank goodness my retirement income is far in excess of that. I can’t imagine living on that alone.
