Data breaches

Usually, data breaches happen when a hacker breaks into the company’s servers, steals all the relevant data, and publishes private data stored by the company. This secret information might include millions of usernames, passwords, personal information, and financial information.

At times, the data is exposed to the world, and everyone on the internet has full access to this information. In other cases, the breaches are still kept secret, and the information is shared among hackers on the dark web for weeks or even months until the breach is discovered.

Breaching some of the biggest corporations is oftentimes seen as an accomplishment for hackers. Like other areas of expertise, there’s constant competition among hackers to target the giants, with zero regard for the real-world consequences that ordinary people might experience.

How to keep your passwords and online accounts secure

Password security is highly important, and maintaining proper password hygiene is easier than you’d think. Simple passwords such as birthdays, your pet’s name, and your zip code can be easily cracked by scammers in less than a minute.

Imagine that they don’t even have to know you. Also, if you decide to use the same password for every single one of your accounts, once they find a password, your accounts are compromised. One of the best ways to protect yourself is to use a password manager.

They usually work for Windows, macOS, iOS, and even Android services, and they generate unique passwords, storing them in one securely encrypted vault. For instance, if you use 1Password, you only have to log in with your master password (I know, you must remember thousands of passwords, one bigger than the other).

Once you’re logged in, 1Password will pop up every time you’re on a website it recognizes. You simply tap on the logo, and your username and password will be filled out automatically.
