#1 COLA (Cost-of-Living Adjustment) Increase in 2026 (Estimated at 2.7%)

The Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) is designed to protect Social Security benefits against inflation. For 2026, experts project an increase of around 2.7%, slightly higher than the 2.5% adjustment in 2025.

That means retirees, survivors, and disability beneficiaries will see a modest rise in their monthly checks. For example, the average retired worker benefit — about $1,976 in 2025 — could increase by more than $50 per month. Over the course of a year, this adjustment can help seniors cover essential costs like health insurance premiums, mortgage payments, credit card bills, and medical loans.

If you’re budgeting for retirement, factor in these COLA adjustments alongside other income streams such as pensions, IRA accounts, 401(k) savings, annuities, and insurance coverage. A smart approach to retirement planning can maximize financial security and reduce long-term reliance on loans or credit debt. Consulting a financial advisor or retirement attorney can also help structure benefits and investments for maximum tax efficiency.
