A Simple Checklist for Evaluating a City for Solo Retirement

As you visit your shortlisted cities, use this mental checklist to keep your thoughts organized and focused on what truly matters for a successful solo retirement.

Community: Did I see evidence of a vibrant community? Are there active senior centers, clubs, volunteer opportunities, and welcoming public spaces that align with my interests?

Affordability: Based on local housing costs, grocery prices, and state taxes, can I comfortably live here on my budget without financial strain?

Healthcare: How close is the nearest highly-rated hospital? Are there primary care doctors and any specialists I need accepting new patients with my insurance?

Activities: Does this city offer the specific amenities I need to be happy, whether it’s hiking trails, museums, a great library, or pickleball courts?

Navigation: Do I feel safe here? Is it easy to get around? Can I imagine myself walking in the neighborhoods or using public transport with ease?

Vibe: Most importantly, how does this place feel? Can I picture myself here? Do the people seem friendly? Does the pace of life match my own?

Embarking on a solo retirement is a brave and exciting new chapter. By thinking carefully about what you want, doing your homework, and being proactive about building a community, you can create a fulfilling, joyful, and connected life on your own terms.
