Massachusetts is the state with the highest adjusted living expenses and yearly in-home service prices. While the state excludes Social Security benefits from taxation, most other types of retirement income will be taxed.

Everything is more expensive than usual, including not only housing but also groceries, healthcare, and miscellaneous expenses.

People often say that renting or buying is just for the wealthy. Going out of town for groceries means fighting the traffic to come back in. If they’re homeowners, retiring residents of Boston may be in line for a windfall that will allow them to live comfortably somewhere else.
