Tips to Avoid Refund Delays

While some delays are unavoidable, there are several steps taxpayers can take to improve their chances of getting a refund faster.

File electronically

E-filing significantly reduces processing time and lowers the chance of errors.

Choose direct deposit

Refunds sent directly to your bank account arrive faster than mailed checks.

Double-check your tax return

Incorrect information—such as Social Security numbers or bank details—can delay processing.

Respond quickly to tax agency letters

If you receive a verification request, responding promptly can help prevent longer delays.

When You Should Contact Your State Tax Agency

If your refund is significantly overdue, it may be worth contacting your state tax office.

In general, you should consider reaching out if:

  • It has been more than six weeks since filing electronically
  • Your refund tracker shows no updates for an extended period
  • You received a letter requesting additional information

However, tax officials recommend checking online tools first before calling, since many delays resolve automatically once processing catches up.
