10 Worst States to Live on Social Security Check Alone

#6 Maryland

The Old Line State has a great deal to offer its retirees, but it also has a few drawbacks that everybody should be aware of.

Only a few states have greater housing prices than Maryland. Healthcare is considerably less expensive than the national average, but not much else is.

The typical property value is more than the national average, at over $389,000, so be prepared to spend your hard-earned dollars on lodging.

Maryland is one of the most expensive states in the country to retire in since it is the only state with both an estate and inheritance tax, and some of your retirement accounts may be taxed as well.

Aside from taxes, what retiree would want to live in the city with its heavy traffic, often unpleasant summers and winters, and high home prices? Whatever Maryland does, seniors who are rich enough to retire anywhere will continue to prefer the traditional locations with nicer weather and lower population density.
