New Court Ruling Could Mean IRS Refunds for Pandemic Tax Penalties (2020–2023)

March 26, 2026 · Personal Finance

How This Differs From Previous IRS Tax Relief

This situation is separate from earlier IRS tax relief programs, where the agency automatically waived penalties for certain taxpayers.

Key differences:

  • Previous relief was automatic—no action required
  • This new opportunity requires filing a refund claim
  • It’s based on a court ruling—not official IRS policy

Additionally, this is unrelated to unclaimed refunds from 2022 tax returns, which have their own deadline (April 15, 2026).

Important Deadlines for Filing a Tax Refund Claim

Timing is crucial when dealing with the IRS.

  • Most tax refund claims must be filed within strict deadlines
  • For pandemic-related penalties, deadlines may begin expiring in 2026
  • Many experts recommend acting before mid-2026

Filing a protective claim now may help preserve your rights while the legal process continues.
