The average spent by US households: $4,828

Your car expenses (including your car insurance, loan, and gas) may seem inflexible, but there are ways to trim your vehicle-related expenses and save yourself some money.

One way to avoid purchasing a new car is to make your current one last a little longer. But if you do have to make a vehicle purchase, go for a late-model used car instead. When compared to the cost of a new model, some gently used ones can help you save a lot of money.

There are also a few other ways to lower your auto insurance, such as taking a defensive driving course to receive a discount or refinancing your auto loan to get a better rate.
