7. Opportunities for education

This doesn’t sound exactly like a hobby, right? Well, for a lot of seniors, educational opportunities are exactly what they’ve always wanted. Some of them want to improve their communication skills, while others are up for learning new things. That’s why a lot of state universities are welcoming older adults to participate and engage in free classes throughout the semester.

One of these universities is located in South Carolina and allows seniors over 60 to take classes without paying anything. Now that’s amazing! If you waited for a sign to learn that foreign language you always wanted to, now is the time. Furthermore, this is also a great “excuse” for you to travel to that country to exercise your spelling!

8. Golf

There’s a good reason we left golf last! Without intending to make a joke, this is essentially the oldest hobby for elders. Golf helps maintain one’s wellness because it utilizes every muscle and offers a good, gentle cardio workout (you can burn at least 1500 calories in one game), in addition to being simple to master.

These were the top eight most popular hobbies for American seniors. Now, it’s up to you to choose one or focus on the ones that you already have. And because we love hearing from our readers, please leave us a comment with your favorite!

I do so many different crafts that I now have 2 craft rooms. I found that Diamond painting and paint by number are both relaxing and take away a lot of stress. I also upcycle glass to make bird baths and feeders. I buy small bird houses and wooden boxes that I paint and decorate. Plus I’m into deco podging clear vases that I find at thrift stores. When the weather gets nice I start working on my flower garden . So yes, I keep busy….

Why did you not include reading as a retirement activity? Many people have little time to read during their working years and raising a family. Reading requires no equipment and can be done anywhere. Most older people prefer books rather than digital reading and there are public libraries with thousands of books, both classic and contemporary, available. Also new and used books often go on sale.

I have so many hobbies in crafting and gardening that I am now a vendor trying to sell some of my wares. Diamond painting, painting birdhouses, nutcrackers, and making Christmas ornaments are just a few that keep me busy..

Along with Yoga: tai chi. Some community colleges offer it as it’s best done as a group (class).

I’m trying to relearn playing guitar. I used to be good enough to enjoy listening to what I played, but I have to warm up the fingers and brain.

Mostly I crochet and sometimes knit. Good way to learn new things and keep my hands busy. Love to crochet hats to donate to different charities.
