5. Potentially valuable collectibles

There is a special feeling when you look at your wealth and see it in a physical form that can be passed on to your family. Stamps, artworks, coins, and any other collectible items can be very special to you, and leaving them to your family can also help with taxes.

In contrast to conventional assets, where the long-term capital gains tax rate is capped at 20%, collectibles have a capital gains tax rate of up to 28%. That means your heir will receive tax-free money for the amount the collectibles were worth on the day of your passing.

However, leaving such valuable items as a legacy has some serious risks. First off, especially if you’ve hidden them, there’s a significantly greater possibility that your heirs will fail to recognize or find these valuable possessions.

Also, many of those assets are difficult to value. Your heirs will need to visit a dealer, and it is not that easy to find a good one. Make sure to inform your heirs of any valuable collectibles you may own, including where they can find them and their estimated value.

We consider these to be the worst assets to inherit. Do you consider that there are others that should be on the list? Tell us in the comments!
