Aside from being a retirement income program, Social Security also provides significant benefits to disabled workers. For instance, in June 2021, the average disabled person received $1,280 per month from Social Security. This amount helps a disabled worker who is unable to work to meet his basic needs.

In 2022, the average Social Security disability benefit is $1,358 per month. These benefits depend on the average lifetime income and not on household income or how serious an individual’s disability is.

The total amount of payments for 2021 was $10,3 billion (for 8,1 million beneficiaries), as well as $600 million to 1,4 million dependents.
