Your Complete Retirement Income Plan: A Step-by-Step Guide for Seniors

First Things First: Understanding Your Retirement Landscape

Before you can build a plan, you need to know what you’re working with. For decades, your financial life was about accumulation—saving and investing for the future. In retirement, the focus shifts to distribution—carefully spending down those assets in a smart, sustainable way. This shift is more than just a change in direction; it introduces new challenges.

One of the biggest is something called sequence of returns risk. This is a fancy term for a simple, but critical, idea: the timing of market downturns matters immensely in retirement. If the stock market has a bad year right after you retire, you’re forced to sell investments at low prices to cover your living expenses. Doing so can permanently shrink your nest egg, making it much harder for your portfolio to recover and last for 30 or more years. A good plan helps protect you from this risk.

Another key concept is cash flow. You need to ensure that the money coming in each month is greater than or equal to the money going out. This sounds simple, but it’s the heart of any successful retirement income plan. It’s about creating a predictable flow, much like the paychecks you were used to while working.

Your first action step is simple but powerful: gather your information. Find your most recent Social Security statement, any pension documents, and statements for all your financial accounts, including your 401(k)s, IRAs, brokerage accounts, and bank accounts. Having everything in one place will make the next steps much easier.
