In terms of healthcare, the medical facilities in Athens are excellent. The Joint Commission has recognized the award-winning Athens Regional Medical Hospital as a Level II adult trauma hospital. Medicare patients are welcome. Athens offers a VA outpatient clinic for war veterans, but the nearest VA hospital is 52 miles away in Decatur.

Since Athens, Georgia, is a college city, it has many artistic activities that give this place an amazing vibe. Visit the art galleries and museums, or listen to the performance held at Hodgson Concert Hall.

So, if we look at all of these advantages, we can easily say that Athens is not only the best city for retirees in Georgia, but it is actually one of the best southeast cities for retirees.

    1. I live in Asheville and we don’t get hurricanes or tornadoes and humidity is never that high. One of the best places to live

    2. My famiily and I moved to N. Carolina from Ct. last year and so far we love it!! the humidity level has been less than Ct. and the cost of living is a lot more affordable!!!

  1. Knoxville is also where a World’s Fair was held in the 1980s, and it’s close to Oak Ridge, where the A-bomb was researched as part of the Manhattan Project. As for Ashville, have you forgotten about Biltmore, the largest private home in the US and built by the tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt?

  2. Who wrote this Ashville just got washed away. Athens is a horrible place for seniors. You have to deal with all the partying and football games. Nobody wants to move to Florida. They are leaving down there because of hurricanes and government.

  3. Looking for a warm State on the East Coast….non-hurricane location if possible.
Retired Air Force MSGT . Widower (recent). If a Military Base is nearby so much the better but not a deciding factor. Looking for a comfortable, year round weather location.
Virginia Beach area familiar to me. Lived there for4 years and really fell in love with it. However maybe your suggestions might enhance my thinking.

  4. I agree 100%, Anita. The Midwestern states, in some of the smaller cities and towns, like Monona or Verona, WI, are among the BEST places to retire. They are very health-conscious communities with walking trails, cycling trails, parks, and lakes throughout Madison, WI, and the suburbs.
