8. Certain Immigrants Over Age 65
Immigrant retirees will not have the required 40 US work credits to qualify for Social Security benefits. Earning 6 work credits in the US and receiving prorated US benefits combined with prorated benefits from their former country (we talked about this on point 5) would solve this issue.
This strategy is beneficial for those workers who don’t have enough benefits in their native country to qualify for that country’s equivalent of Social Security payments.
If their former countries’ laws permit, older immigrants who don’t qualify for US Social Security can claim their benefits while living in the US.
