Full retirement age in 2025

Unfortunately, this year you will have to wait a little bit longer to reach full retirement age (FRA). This is one of the Social Security changes and directly impacts seniors. Right now, FRA steadily increases for people born between 1955 and 1960, reaching 67 for those born in 1960 or after.

So, to make things clear, in 2025, FRA is 66 years and 10 months. Now, the big question is how this one of the Social Security changes will impact your benefits. This is a great question, and we have the answer to it right here.

If you retire at 62, your monthly payments will be lowered. The decrease is determined as 5/9 of 1% every month during the first 36 months prior to FRA. Then 5/12 of 1% each month for any extra months beyond 36.

Delaying retirement beyond FRA will increase your benefits. Your payments increase by 8% each year for every year you postpone getting Social Security after the FRA (up to age 70).

The Social Security earnings test

In case you decide that you still want to work while you are receiving social security benefits, you have to be aware that your earnings could temporarily reduce your monthly payment. This is one of the new social security changes, and it is called the Social Security Earnings Test. This will apply every year until you reach your full retirement age (FRA).

But before your benefits are affected by this change, you still have the chance to earn more. Let’s say you are below FRA. When this is the case, the Social Security Administration will withhold $1 in benefits for every $2 you earn over $23,400. This limit was increased from the former one of $22,320.

  1. So when the Biden Administration lied about our inflation rate, our COLA stays low…
Everything doubled and tripled in price over Trump 45… Thanks Joe… In fact thanks for all these things… More stupid stuff Trump needs to fix… Good news is we have at least 4 affordable years coming now…

    1. Nice try comrade….Nothing much went up under Biden except for eggs. I don’t eat them so no big deal. Now beef under the orange idiot. Thru the roof under his watch….

      1. Robert Vannelli Jr

In fact, under biden, inflation rose to 20% between 2021-2022. Remember when biden told us he would not raise taxes on people whose incomes were under $400,000? What do you think inflation is? The average household in 2021 paid an extra $9,000-11,000 out of pocket for food, utlities and rent to cover the added cost of inflation. And by the way, guess who voted twice to raise SS taxes, once to 50% and again to 85%, while he was a Senator from SA?

      2. Thanks for standing up for President Biden. Trump took credit for the great things President Obama did and the great things he did like, he got rid of them. The great things his followers said Trump did in his first term was what Obama did. The first term his followers said Trump did great things at that time but they could name over one thing he did. As with my first amendment speaking in my opinion, I believe true. Trump has a mental issue.

    2. Bill C.did you all of a sudden forgot how bad that dumb president of yours messed up the first time he was in office and now he really put his foot in his mouth by putting tariffs on other county and them putting it back on us prices go up for all of us he will put United States in a recession

      1. Robert Vannelli Jr

The Congressional Budget Office projects that the tariffs enacted from Jan. 6 through Aug. 19 will drop the deficit by $3.3 trillion if the higher tariffs persist from 2025‒2035.

I notice that you posted this in January, before the trump took office. How do you feel NOW? He hasn’t kept ANY promises he made to get elected. The cost of groceries, gas, utilities, medical care is through the roof. I can’t afford the meat I bought before, and other groceries are jumping up in price by 2.00 or so. This administration is the worst in history. As long as he gets to golf, accept a jet, and sell out to Putin, you are perfectly fine with all of it. He’s selling all of us out, but it’s okay if the Constitution and the Bill of Rights are destroyed, along with Democracy. WAKE UP!

    4. I Agree! Things will level off then start climbing up for us True American Patriots… all research and evidence shows this! The Golden Age! It’s COMING!!! I’m excited to actually see results and SOON!!!

  2. Interesting that major changes occur when “baby boomers” are seeking to receive SSA based on an assured plan that others have enjoyed. I have always believed that SSA problem is the free funds given away called SSI. Most recipients of SSI have NOT paid a penny into the system but yet they collect money based on COL increases.
Some are just born w/birth defects due to Mom drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, life style choices and lack of prenatal care; some receive & never worked because of addictions that have them handicapped; some may have paid in system but due to handicap from wrong choices not enough paid in due to poor work history for SSA. legitimate hard working people who paid faithfully are penalized because of where they worked yet they paid SSA faithfully. the system is NOW unfair, people are being cheated and no one (politicians esp.) care as they do not need SSA. What a real trick or
lie the Government has successfully played on baby boomers!

    1. Janet Ann Zander

“Just born with defects”? What a heartless ghoul you are. In other countries in the world, EVERYONE is cared for. What REALLY irritates me, is the fact that Women only make 78 cents compared to the $1,00 a man makes. This greatly affects how much Social Security we get. This is unacceptable. I am a degreed person, with lots of corporate experience, and a computer systems analyst. The ONLY place that pays women the same, is the government, but who knows what will happen with this administration?

  3. Please I’ve been paying Social Security and Medicare since 15 years old now I’m disabled and need my benefits, I have 2 serious terminal illnesses, and need if any thing more in my monthly check I’m barely getting by my rent is more then my monthly check and my son helps me ,please don’t cut any of my SSD check ,I’ve worked hard all my life ,and am ill now and don’t need to stress about being homeless, I have enough stress as it is ,PLEASE DON’T CUT MY SSD I NEED IT TO SURVIVE 🙏🏼✝️🙏🏼✝️ DAVID H

  4. The government spent our taxes but now I cannot pay my bills and groceries. They don’t care as long as they get their $180,000 a year. Probably never worked a day punching a clock. Let’s not even talk about spouses. We are paying taxes for them to have face lifts. They don’t have to worry about anything. Suicide is better than living $1200.00 a month you’ll see a lot of our seniors make this decision. It’s bad out here!!!

    1. Connie the Republicans have done all of that to the nation. I just home a third party, that believes in democracy can be in power then the Autocratic, republicans, Nor the, to liberal democrats, will not have a voice in the destruction of this nation.

      1. Robert Vannelli Jr

As a Senator representing DE, a state with a sizable retired population, biden voted to increase SS taxes twice, once to 50% and again to 85%. He served in the Senate for 47 years and did absolutely nothing to sponsor legislation to reform Social Security. We’ve had both Republican and Democrat controlled Congresses, both parties have kicked the can down the road. But you can blame Johnson for being the first President to raid the Social Security “trust fund” to pay for his Great Society Programs.

  5. Well it seems like no matter what you do to make yourself happy you can always do something to make yourself feel better. The people in this world who are making all of these erroneous decisions are not thinking about all of us only their select group of people that they want to be part of the injustice of the world to continuously make themselves better and the rest of us just suffer. We all should have equality the same way as everyone else in the world. Being a senior is not a privilege but a right to choose to be treated equally as others. Sometimes we cannot go and get employed because of our abilities to be treated differently than others but we are entitled to our rights and freedoms to choose what we want and what we need.

  6. I dont get enough to ever retire. I will die at work. At 67will go back full time I started drawing at 63because at 67 my payment would have been 1,450.00 or so which is not enough to get by. I started drawing at 63 and plan never to retire. So just keep sending my check and you won’t hear from me again because all my questions have been answered. I will leave my email and name if you ever have any questions for me feel free. PS. You should let me buy real supplements with flex cards, such as super greens or balance of nature red and green. Thank You. Sincerly, Ronald F. Sullivan Jr

    1. Never! That no taxes on social security was said to get our vote. As many other things that was said. It was a tool he used to become President. The prices was suppose to come down. Now the prices are higher and Seniors are suffering.

  7. I am on SS it’s not enough to pay rent and buy food for my
Self. I have my husband in memory care. Because I can’t
take care of him. I have gone thru all of our savings to pay
For him. I had to sell our house that we lived in for 53 years
And move to a different state. Leave all my friends and now
I am starting all over at 79 years old. Sometimes life is not
Fair. I need my SS and my husband’s SS with the price of
Drugs and everything else it is so depressing please don’t
Get rid of SS. We seniors need it.

    1. This breaks my heart, sweet lady. I wish the best for you and your husband. The thing that really bothers me about our Country is hard working people like you and your husband who paid taxes, bought a house, did the right thing have had to sell your home so he could get assistance and care in a memory care home. If you two hadn’t worked hard nor owned a home, you would have more than likely got free or no/low cost care for him! They reward those who sponge off of the taxpayers and don’t work, but yet, citizens who work get the shaft!

  8. I can not retire on my ss I have worked full time as a nurse .I am 72 and still work full time.I have a mortgage and a second mortgage also between health care supplement .dentist bills.high cost prescriptions and auto insurance we are barely making it.Now I have to pay 5800 I owe to the IRS.How much more can I handle.

    1. Janet Ann Zander

Karen – my ex spouse didn’t pay our taxes for 10 years. We would complete and sign the forms, and then he wouldn’t send them to the IRS. When I left, I was homeless, and had to get 2 jobs to get back on my feet. Then, the IRS informed me about $25,000. owed in back taxes. I told them what happened, and they got my share down to $10,000. I went to the IRS Office that is separate from the regular IRS. I worked out a plan with them to make payments, and they stopped the interest from compounding. The service is free, and they really helped me.
I hope this information will help you too.
The main thing is to talk to them. Avoiding the issue never works.

  9. BULL SHIT , BIDEN WAS TELLING THE TRUTH ,, THAT WORTHLESS trumpSCUM HAS LIED ABOUT EVERYTHING , AND YOU ARE LYING ALSO , JUST KEEP KISSINGtrumpSCUMS ASS !

  10. Trump lied as always so get over it and fight against the MAGA movement as it is just an autocratic militaristic regime starting to get a foot hold on our democracy
