1. Alaska

Alaska is one of the toughest states for retirees, and the harsh weather is just one of the reasons why. The state’s remote location drives up the price of goods and makes it challenging to visit family and friends. Unless your family is also in Alaska, seeing them involves a pretty long, expensive plane ride.

According to personal finance experts, since Alaska is isolated, prices for things like coffee, coffee creamer, bell peppers, and bleach are three to four times what they cost compared to other US states. And there’s also the winter. Those who may want to move here should know that temperatures in Alaska can plunge below -30°F.

  1. Retire in Sochi, Russia. It has nice weather and friendly people. Your dollar might go a long way. The Russian healthcare system is shaky, but you’ll find a nice little expat community to hang around with. There’s plenty of Vodka and red caviar to enjoy.

  2. We were driving packed and barely moving Southern California freeways yesterday.
My wife commented that for a state that people supposedly can’t afford to live in, why is it so darn crowded everywhere you go? Roads, shopping, restaurants, gas stations, doctor offices, beaches, sporting events ,you name it, it is packed witht the people who supposedly can’t afford to live here!
Seems to us that people are affording to live in California just fine and with abundance.
