2. Midland, Michigan

Midland, Michigan, has recently gained attention as a top retirement destination thanks to its combination of affordability and quality of life. In U.S. News’ 2026 Best Places to Retire rankings, Midland outranked many larger cities nationwide. Its strong performance in retirement-specific metrics — including housing costs, tax friendliness, and overall value — makes it particularly appealing.

The city’s median home value sits well below the national average, giving retirees access to decent housing without draining savings. Lower property prices also help keep property taxes in check. Although Michigan does have a state income tax, Social Security benefits aren’t taxed and many retirees find their money stretches further here than in high-cost coastal markets.

Midland also benefits from good healthcare infrastructure, critical for retirees. With local hospitals and specialists within easy reach, seniors can age in place with confidence. Beyond practical considerations, Midland boasts parks, trails, and cultural attractions that support an active retirement lifestyle — all while keeping everyday expenses affordable.
