Will these Social Security changes impact you in 2026?

As you already know, this pattern never goes away, and the new year comes with changes in Social Security! January is the month that brings a couple of fresh rules regarding Social Security, and they include check amounts, taxes, credits, and, last but not least, new retirement age rules.

Understanding these updates is essential for strong retirement planning and exploring options like the best annuities for retirees.

Why do you need to be aware of all of these changes? Because this gives you a huge advantage and might help you save more money in the long run. For example, this is your chance to see if the new adjustments make you eligible for various benefits. If you can make some profit out of this, why wouldn’t you do it, right?

Many seniors also review Medicare Supplement Insurance plans during these changes to reduce health-care costs in retirement.

What is essential to know is that these changes are happening regardless of political results. But you still need to keep an eye on what changes might happen in 2026.

Read on and discover what the new year brings for your Social Security!

I am a retired teacher. How will I know if I get the SSA benefits ? I earned my 40 before I went in to teaching.

Why is there numerous sites that want us to listen to a video that goes on and on forever and says literally the same thing. Just give us the gimmick and we will buy or not. I am forever turned off by the many of such advertisements. I am sure that I have missed something helpful because of all these kinds of advertisements.

Social Security payments are from the money that workers paid into it. The government should not have a say as to it leaving, how it is taxed, or any other changes. If the government needs money, have the Governors, Senators, and Representatives start looking at the old commitments that each state has been collecting money on and find out if it is legitimate. So many things have been kept on the books and are not even in existence any more. How about working on finding the phony line items in the budget, cleaning up the books, and leave the retired worker social security alone?

Hopefully, Trump will be able to fulfil his promises. But unfortunately, the Deep State and the Dem party it has been affiliated with have too many options to prevent Trump from all good things he has been pushing for, or at least to slow down the progress in hopes some Dem comes to power in 2028 and they will credit themselves for the progress they are so viciously stalling now.

What happened under Biden was a direct result of Trump’s economic stupidity & COVID. He also let over 1 million people die due to COVID. So do a fact check. Biden Admin did not lie about the inflation rate & the US was in the best position, in spite of Trump’s economic woes & Covid, than any nation in the world. And inflation was controlled to deter recession & depression, which you can now expect under Trump, an economically challenged moron.

In fact, under biden, inflation rose to 20% between 2021-2022. Remember when biden told us he would not raise taxes on people whose incomes were under $400,000? What do you think inflation is? The average household in 2021 paid an extra $9,000-11,000 out of pocket for food, utlities and rent to cover the added cost of inflation. And by the way, guess who voted twice to raise SS taxes, once to 50% and again to 85%, while he was a Senator from SA?

Thanks for standing up for President Biden. Trump took credit for the great things President Obama did and the great things he did like, he got rid of them. The great things his followers said Trump did in his first term was what Obama did. The first term his followers said Trump did great things at that time but they could name over one thing he did. As with my first amendment speaking in my opinion, I believe true. Trump has a mental issue.

I thoughts exactly. The joke is on us. There’s no more money because they’ve given it all away to people that didn’t have the right to take any money from it. Now they’re trying to push back the age when the baby boomers can get access to it. Sad, we’ve worked and had no choice in paying into this fund, and now they’re trying tell you no no not yet. But like you say to the people that have Never put one penny into to SS, can get a check no problem, no age restriction. But they need to keep the checks rolling so guess who has to keep working. We believed the lie, now it’s in jeopardy and it may not be there for the people that actually paid into without a choice. Wow, we should be the ones that absolutely get a check no matter what happens.

Interesting that major changes occur when “baby boomers” are seeking to receive SSA based on an assured plan that others have enjoyed. I have always believed that SSA problem is the free funds given away called SSI. Most recipients of SSI have NOT paid a penny into the system but yet they collect money based on COL increases.
Some are just born w/birth defects due to Mom drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, life style choices and lack of prenatal care; some receive & never worked because of addictions that have them handicapped; some may have paid in system but due to handicap from wrong choices not enough paid in due to poor work history for SSA. legitimate hard working people who paid faithfully are penalized because of where they worked yet they paid SSA faithfully. the system is NOW unfair, people are being cheated and no one (politicians esp.) care as they do not need SSA. What a real trick or
lie the Government has successfully played on baby boomers!

Wow! Do you have any idea what you’re talking about?!? Both me and my son are getting SAA benefits for REAL birth defects, that have not been due to drugs, alcohol or anything else that you have mentioned, but were born with them. People like you are biased and are what my dad would call closed minded. Actually my defect wasn’t diagnosed until I was working for 7 years and was told to stop working or it will totally paralyze me. And I never touched alcohol or anything like that when pregnant with my son but he was born with multiple problems, and it hasn’t been easy for my family and SSA has been our main way of paying our house rent and basic daily bills and food. But you do have a point about half the people that get benefits from drugs and alcohol- I know a few of them that need to be taken off the program and be put in some sort of treatment and find work. But from now, just please think before you say things?

Many whites were bought over here to enjoy what they built off of the backs of slaves. This foundation is built off of murder and deceit. We originally owned the earth and unless we take it back then we will be lead to our own death much like Jonestown. They will kill before they allow the masses to really wake up. Even right now they give to whites around the earth that support a reality things we have to work for. That is why we fund Israel. That is why the killers from South Africa were bought here and the people of the nazi Ukraine. We suffer because of the people who rule the world with deceit and murder. No one is able to stand up to them right now.
As for those people born with birth defects, that is why they killed Jesus and covered up real blackness. Now instead of humans, beast rule.

Most of what you say is true; however, if the US stopped involving itself in so many overseas wars and stopped funding other countries’ internal conflicts, perhaps there would be enough money to take care of its own issues and people.

“Just born with defects”? What a heartless ghoul you are. In other countries in the world, EVERYONE is cared for. What REALLY irritates me, is the fact that Women only make 78 cents compared to the $1,00 a man makes. This greatly affects how much Social Security we get. This is unacceptable. I am a degreed person, with lots of corporate experience, and a computer systems analyst. The ONLY place that pays women the same, is the government, but who knows what will happen with this administration?

I can sense you are probably like a few members of my family who were broad sided by false news on ABC , CBS, NBC, MSNBC …, CNN, but we watch all channels …yes Fox news, but we also watch CNN and we are 2 very intelligent humans who look at both sides!!! You should really investigate before commenting about falsehoods because we at least did our due diligence and looked up information. My family has been Democratic and Republican because we researched … I don’t want my granddaughter going into her bathroom and finding a male peeing in there exposing himself there or in the Gym shower. Our school District in Central Bucks, Bucks county Pa. Found they had ONE Transgender child in the school, but an adult Trans person took over and attacked the district and rumours went flying , lies Spread, but the truth was they were also pushing for very disturbing school books in their Library where my fourth grade grand daughter could bring a book home to read that showed filthy photos of a male peeing on another child, and vulgar photos but drawings where disgusting photos showing sexual acts and these are drawings of fourth and fifth graders contribute to acts of filthy displays that I can’t even mention or I will vomit. Please do your research!!!!

As a Senator representing DE, a state with a sizable retired population, biden voted to increase SS taxes twice, once to 50% and again to 85%. He served in the Senate for 47 years and did absolutely nothing to sponsor legislation to reform Social Security. We’ve had both Republican and Democrat controlled Congresses, both parties have kicked the can down the road. But you can blame Johnson for being the first President to raid the Social Security “trust fund” to pay for his Great Society Programs.

Well it seems like no matter what you do to make yourself happy you can always do something to make yourself feel better. The people in this world who are making all of these erroneous decisions are not thinking about all of us only their select group of people that they want to be part of the injustice of the world to continuously make themselves better and the rest of us just suffer. We all should have equality the same way as everyone else in the world. Being a senior is not a privilege but a right to choose to be treated equally as others. Sometimes we cannot go and get employed because of our abilities to be treated differently than others but we are entitled to our rights and freedoms to choose what we want and what we need.

I believe we should have 401K taken out as soon as work is started because people do not save enough for retirement and then complain their social security isn’t enough to live on when it was never meant to live on. It was meant to be a part of your retirement. I use to try to teach employees their need to save in 401K and 457b but people would not listen. Now, for many it’s too late. People must start immediately to save in different accounts to have enough to retire. Start early as possible even a small amount started early can make a huge difference. I also feel we should have another health care taken from paychecks called LTC ins to help with Long Term Care in elderly years. This would be a help to those who need home healthcare in elder years.

I was so stress out but by the time they gave it back I became homeless. Now is impossible for me to get into a place that I can afford because the rent has increased so much. On top of it all they want 2 times of the rent or higher so I don’t qualify. The places I do qualify they have huge waiting list. It has been years now and I am still WAITING. This is so sad that they don’t do something about affordable housing.

What No Tax on Tips Does
To start, the “no tax on tips” provision of the OBBBA, Section 70201, isn’t a tax exemption—it’s a deduction. Specifically, it is an above the line deduction of up to $25,000 for tips received in the course of ordinary employment, as long as they are voluntary and properly reported. Like the overtime deduction, this one is also temporary: it applies through tax year 2028.
It is also gated. Tips must be reported on a W-2 or other IRS-recognized form, and the job must be one that customarily receives tips—the Treasury Department will be issuing guidance fleshing out that latter bit. If you work in hospitality, you will probably qualify. If you’re a flyfishing instructor collecting Venmo payments and occasional cash thank-yous, maybe not.
What the 2025 law actually did — and didn’t — change
On July 4, 2025, President Trump signed what he dubbed “The One Big Beautiful Bill,” touting it as a historic win for seniors. He claimed it would eliminate federal income taxes on Social Security benefits. But tax professionals and policy analysts say that’s not what the law actually does.

Social Security benefits remain taxable — up to 85%, depending on income.
There is no specific exemption for Social Security income.
The bill did create a new tax deduction for older taxpayers: the “senior bonus.”
What is the “senior bonus” deduction?
The senior bonus is a temporary, age-based deduction of up to $6,000 for individuals aged 65 and older — or $12,000 for qualifying married couples filing jointly.

      Key rules:

Available for tax years 2025 through 2028
Phases out starting at $75,000 MAGI for singles and $150,000 for joint filers
Ends entirely at $175,000 (single) and $250,000 (joint)
You must file jointly to qualify as a couple
Not available to taxpayers under 65
It’s a deduction, not a credit, meaning it reduces taxable income — but does not eliminate tax liability on its own.

Historically there have been other governmental groups have borrowed from the SS fund and never repaid what they borrowed. The government could go back to review all the borrowing and get the info. That Borrowing should never have dipped into the SS funds. Had they kept their fingers out of our fund, we would not be in the situation of the fund run out of funds today. Make the rich pay more into the fund. If necessary, the current rate could be increased by 1% and would all money to the SS fund would be a sensible manner to make the funds in a better situation.

If you two hadn’t worked hard nor owned a home, you would have more than likely got free or no/low cost care for him! Karen – my ex spouse didn’t pay our taxes for 10 years. We would complete and sign the forms, and then he wouldn’t send them to the IRS. When I left, I was homeless, and had to get 2 jobs to get back on my feet. Then, the IRS informed me about $25,000. owed in back taxes. I told them what happened, and they got my share down to $10,000. I went to the IRS Office that is separate from the regular IRS. I worked out a plan with them to make payments, and they stopped the interest from compounding. The service is free, and they really helped me.

Hopefully our current government can get it under control God knows the past government did not care at all. My family has all been democrats. Anyone who votes for a democrat now is a fool. Just look at how much of our tax money has been given to stupid stuff which was implemented originally by the democrats. It may be too late but lets pray that Trump does a better job then Biden.

I am a 69-year-old female, and I retired four years ago after working for the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital for 35 years. I collect Social Security and Retirement Benefits. I started working when I was 14 years old, for 55 years of my life, I have been working and paid into the systems. It’s sad that we are at this stage in our lives that we may have to find a part time job to survive and pay our bills. This is what congress needs to be working on instead of sending money to other countries, take care of home first. The cost of food, living expenses and health care are ridiculous, let’s take care home first and work on these issues.

Our voting population have to stop believing democrat lies. If you think they even consider you in any of their actions you should know better. The law of economics are you cannot spend more than you earn. Democrats have ruined SS and keep telling you the republicans are going to take your SS away. The sooner we wake up to the fact democrats lie and only care about themselves the sooner things will get better. Democrats always keep things stirred up because they only win when things are bad. Want to stop the bad? Stop electing democrats.

Double taxiation will never go away. As a retired government worker and someone who has worked since the age of 14 and I am now 69 years old, I had to go in and increase the amount of taxes taken out of my retirement and social security, it was either that or pay a big tax bill. The cost of health care and medications are unaffordable for some people. When will we start to take cared of home first and not send our money to other countries to help them, when we need help ourselves.

I am 63 and receive $174 SS a month. I was a stay-at-home mom with 3 kids. My husband claimed our 3 kids and me on returns. I cannot draw on his SS because we got divorced after 9 years and 7 months. I have lived in this house with my husband and 3 kids for over 20 years, but that didn’t count. Now I take care and live here still cause my ex-husband had a double stroke that fried part of his brain. I can’t live anywhere else. i can’t afford it and i can’t work due to a very bad back so I am just screwed but thankful i get what i get it’s better than nothing altho that’s what i get nothing.

I get $1587.00 SS a month. After $187.00 is taken out for Medicare part B. I don’t pay rent or a house payment.
But, I barely make it every month. I can hardly buy groceries.
If I had to pay rent or a house payment, I wouldn’t make it at all.
How does an elderly person get by?
Especially, those unable to work, anymore.

It’s a joke what little money we get and how do they think we can live off of it? With everything going sky high prices except the money we are given to live off.

Inflation is so out of control and President Trump promised he would fix. I don’t know what we are going to do with all our bills and medication we have to buy. We were supposed to get lower premiums on car insurance but we are not when we drive less but that’s not happening. We can’t afford to to do anything anymore because our social security cola is so low and then you raise our Medicare premium and so we don’t get a raise. And you raise our Medicare part B deductible. Going to the store is a joke we can buy much so we just do without.

Why you blaming Trump for the mess that we’re in right now between the wars he inherit the gas prices I don’t know if you forgot the last 4 years gas prices what’s the problem then delivery trucks of course delivering food was the next problem. it is only 7 months Trump is trying toto make things good again when he was in office last time but then again we’re living in the day where good is bad in bad is good to some people. Social security was always a problem it not enough to live on

The fact is our government got us into this mess, yet we look to them to get us out. The first mistake was when they were allowed to dip into our funds, promising to repay with interest, and run such a high deficit they were unable to. They scream we’re running short on funds and must do something, changing the full retirement age so we would work longer for more tax revenue. They use the excuse that people are living longer, without a mention of all those who paid in and died of disease or accident without drawing a dime. They tell us it’s crucial to have a solid savings or retirement account, unable to live on SS alone, for more tax revenue when we withdraw without a government dime invested. We pay in our entire working careers for the benefit, not entitlement, to sustain a living when we’re no longer able to work and earn our living. It’s a little ironic when they freely handed out our tax paid benefits to millions of illegals, while we continued getting our checks except with inadequate cost of living increases. Where did all that money appear when they screamed a shortfall, giving us checks a notch above poverty. And then, we have to pay Medicare premiums to keep the system from going bust handing our money over to illegals, without a dime of tax paid in by them. President Trump called for no tax on SS recipients, that ended up with a four thousand dollar reduction because the Senate allowed an installed Democrat parliamentary to gut most of the BBB. Instead of voting her out with a simple majority, RINO Thunes said he would respect her for calling the shots. We elected the Senate yet they allow an unelected appointee to tell them how to do their job. If after all the deportation, with the waste and fraud they found within the SS system, and we don’t get the livable benefit we paid for, just know our SS system is corrupt to the core and generations to come after will be starved out. Greed is ticket to Hell.

Would it do any good to quit working and get social security disability if I turn 62 next September? I know I would qualify having degenerative discs, spinal stenosis, epilepsy etc.
