Offer an alternative form of ID

If there’s a business or any other kind of organization that requires your SSN, just offer your driver’s license number instead. There might be other alternative forms of ID, which might include a passport, proof of current and previous addresses (like utility bills), and even a student ID from a college or university.

Ask why they need it

If you find yourself in a situation where the business insists, start asking questions. You have every right to know why they need your SSN so badly. When you find out, proceed to ask how it will be handled.

  • Why do you think that my SSN is necessary?
  • Who will have access to my number if I decide to provide it?
  • How will my number be stored?
  • Do you have any privacy policy, and if so, may I see it?
  • Will you cover my liability or losses in case the number is compromised?

It’s important to know that if a business or an institution asks for your Social Security number, despite the fact that they might not need it, and you refuse to give it away, that institution is entitled to terminate the collaboration or put conditions on the service. You might be asked for a deposit or other additional fees.
