The Retiree’s Guide to Senior Discounts: 50+ Places You Can Save

Timing is Everything: When You Buy Matters

Smart shoppers know that when you buy is just as important as where you buy. By aligning your purchases with natural sales cycles, you can save even more.

Seasonal Sales and Clearance Cycles

Retail stores operate on a predictable calendar. Learning it can unlock huge savings.

  • Post-Holiday Clearance: The day after any major holiday (Christmas, Easter, Halloween) is the best time to buy seasonal decor, candy, and themed items for next year at 50-90% off.
  • White Sales (January): This is the traditional time to buy bedding, linens, and towels.
  • Model Year Changes: Large appliances, cars, and electronics have new models released annually. Buy last year’s model right before the new one comes out for deep discounts. This often happens in the fall.
  • Produce in Season: Buying fruits and vegetables when they are in season locally is not only cheaper but also tastes better. Strawberries in June will be much less expensive than in December.

Travel Off the Beaten Path: Shoulder Season

The “shoulder season” is the sweet spot for travel. It’s the period right before or right after the peak tourist season. For Europe, this might be April-May or September-October. For Florida, it might be late spring. By traveling during these times, you’ll find:

  • Lower prices on flights and hotels.
  • Fewer crowds at popular attractions.
  • More pleasant weather.

Combine shoulder-season travel with your AARP hotel discount and a senior airline fare for maximum savings.
