3. Washington

Washington, DC is certainly one of the most affordable cities to make the cut. Just to be sure, moving to a state with a higher median household income doesn’t mean that your Social Security benefit is going to increase suddenly. The majority of these 10 states offer higher income opportunities for workers which will help them boost the Social Security benefits when they’ll retire.

Social Security benefits increased in 2022 because there was an increase in the Consumer Price Index from the third quarter of 2020 through the third quarter of 2021.

This year in January, the federal benefit is $841 for an individual and $1,261 for a couple. In Washington, people who are 65 or older or children who are blind or have disabilities are eligible for Social Security. Don’t forget that you can file the application online as well!

4. New York

Like in other states, in New York, the maximum benefit depends on the age at which you retire. If you retire in 2022 at the full retirement age, you will benefit by $3,345. But if you retire at 62, for example, your maximum benefit will be $2,364.

And if you are brave and you want to work just a little bit more, when you are 70 this year and you decide to retire, your maximum benefit will be $4,194.
