Understanding the Bigger Picture: Inflation and Policy Changes

The COLA formula is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). Many senior advocates argue that it doesn’t accurately capture the expenses of older Americans. Some have proposed switching to the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E), which could lead to larger annual adjustments.

At the same time, the long-term solvency of the Social Security Trust Fund remains under debate. While there’s no immediate danger to benefits, retirees should stay informed about potential reforms — especially proposals that affect COLA calculations, retirement age, or Medicare funding.
