401k Loans: Are They REALLY Worth It?

How can you borrow from your 401k?

While you can’t withdraw from a 401k without paying interest and penalties, most plans offer loans. You’ll need to talk to your company’s plan administrator or human resources to get a straightforward answer to this question.

You can also go online and log into your 401k account to confirm if this is an option. Unlike a regular loan from a bank or any other lender, borrowing from a 401k doesn’t have a credit requirement.

So as long as this is available and you have a big enough balance, you can qualify for this type of loan. 401k loans aren’t reported to the credit bureaus. So because of this, they won’t build your credit, and they won’t affect your capability of qualifying for any other loans.

Depending on the state you reside in, due to community property rules, your spouse might need to sign off on a 401k loan. This ensures that one spouse doesn’t spend money they might have a claim to in case of a divorce.

…Knowing this, click “Next,” and let’s take a closer look at the benefits and risks.
