If you ever sat in a movie theater in 1967 and watched Cool Hand Luke, you remember Joy Harmon’s scene. As “Lucille,” the young woman washing her car in front of a chain gang of stunned prisoners, she anchored one of the most talked-about moments in American cinema. The scene only lasted a few minutes, but it became part of the visual language of an entire generation of moviegoers.

Harmon’s career also included guest spots on the television favorites of her time, including Batman, Bewitched, and The Beverly Hillbillies. In the 1970s, she stepped away from Hollywood to focus on her family and eventually opened Aunt Joy’s Cakes in California, where she became as well known for her layer cakes as she had once been for her film work. She passed away at the age of 85, leaving behind a small but unforgettable contribution to American film history.
