Kitchen safety is a must

While a common safety tip is to make sure that you minimize the safety hazards associated with bathrooms (due to the risk of falling asleep there), another room that sometimes falls under the radar of safety tips for seniors is the kitchen! Not only are we at an increased risk of contracting a foodborne illness as we age, but you have ample opportunities to harm yourself when it comes to the kitchen, even when you are cooking, and sometimes even when you are just walking inside or outside of the room!

A great way to make sure you minimize kitchen hazards and safety issues is to make sure that you do not keep or consume expired foods, that you throw out all the food that has spoiled or that you do not want to eat anymore, and that you make your kitchen as safe as possible. This includes making sure that you prevent any accidental fires or burns when cooking, along with safely storing your sharp objects.

Another important safety tip is that you should test your smoke detectors regularly, along with the gas one if you have one and that you install some of those special shut-off devices on kitchen appliances that heat up so that you do not forget to turn them off. Even better, make sure you opt for nonslip mats or runners if you want a carpet in the kitchen!
