Average home list price: $209,800
Percentage of residents aged 60 and up: 26.8%

Suppose you don’t want to retire near the ocean, especially with all the devastating hurricanes that hit our country. Then the well-known town of New Bern, located along the Neuse River, is perfect for you.

This adorable retirement town is close enough for a weekend getaway to the shore but just far enough away for when storm season rolls through. And seniors like that the area isn’t always packed with tourists as well, despite its historical background.

Fun Fact: New Bern is the original state capital of North Carolina, not Raleigh.

Future residents would be pleasantly surprised to find out that their 2,500 sqft house will have a property tax bill of only about $2,500, which is a steal compared with what they would be paying in the northern part of our country.

Outdoor opportunities here are endless, and many boomers are lured to the area by the commercial airport in town, something many small retirement towns don’t have.
