How to use emails safely

You have to check the sender’s email address before clicking on anything. Just look out for addresses that look slightly similar to anything you might know but with nuanced variations. Also, be careful with any links that promise cheaper products or ask you to complete a survey to receive additional free services.

Your friends might be hacked, too, so if your long-time friend suddenly asks you to vote for them in a contest they would never attend, that’s fishy from the start.

How to protect your privacy

Cybercriminals might try to take advantage of you on Facebook. The process is easier than you’d think, as they only have to create a fake Facebook account and exploit unaware individuals. If you receive any kind of unsolicited communication or interaction from someone you don’t even know on Facebook, make sure you check their profile picture, personal details, followers or friends, and also your mutual friends.

Usually, you shouldn’t engage with them. Plenty of criminals might try to contact you in the hope that you will give up all your financial and personal information.

Also, one of the easiest things out there is for a scammer to steal a Facebook user’s account information. Once they’ve convinced someone to give up their Facebook information, hackers will automatically use the victim’s profile to spam their friends with additional junk links and surveys meant to steal more user data.

I bet you’ve seen by now how a Facebook account might get hacked. Suddenly, that user who used to post funny jokes that you’ve always enjoyed suddenly starts asking for money or votes on a beauty contest.

And if you try to warn your friend about their suspicious activity, they won’t respond. Well, that’s not due to the fact that they have suddenly decided to act rudely, but because a bot controls their account! In this case, if they text you, delete the message and block the user. That account is probably doomed anyway.
