The Retiree’s Guide to Senior Discounts: 50+ Places You Can Save

Know Your Rights: Using Store Policies to Your Advantage

Store policies aren’t just rules; they are promises to you, the customer. Understanding them can protect you from bad purchases and save you money.

Price Matching and Price Guarantees

Many large retailers (like Target and Best Buy) have a price match policy. This means if you find an identical item for a lower price at a competitor’s store, they will sell it to you for that lower price.

How to do it:

  1. Before a big purchase, use your phone to check the price of the same item at 2-3 major competitors.
  2. If you find it cheaper, pull up the ad or website on your phone.
  3. Show it to the cashier or customer service representative and politely ask for a price match.

Always check the store’s official policy page on their website first. They will list which competitors they match and what rules apply.

Return Policies and Satisfaction Guarantees

A generous return policy is like free insurance on your purchase. It reduces the risk of being stuck with something that doesn’t work or doesn’t fit. Stores with great return policies (like Costco or L.L.Bean) give you peace of mind. A satisfaction guarantee means the store stands behind its products and will make it right if you’re not happy.

Don’t Forget to Ask for a Rain Check

As we mentioned earlier, if a hot sale item is out of stock, don’t just leave empty-handed. Go to the customer service desk and ask for a rain check. This secures the sale price for you once the item is restocked. It’s a simple step most people forget.

A Note on Scams

Be cautious of “discounts” that seem too good to be true, especially online or over the phone. Scammers sometimes target seniors with promises of exclusive deals that require you to give up personal information. Stick to well-known businesses and official websites. For reliable information on avoiding scams, the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov) is an excellent resource.

Frequently Asked Questions: Advanced Savings

  • Can I combine a senior discount with a coupon? This depends entirely on the store’s policy. Kohl’s is famous for allowing it. Grocery stores often do, too. For restaurants, it’s less common. The key is to read the fine print on the coupon and, when in doubt, ask!
  • Do I get a discount if I shop online? Sometimes, but it’s less common than in-store. Some sites will have a box to check or a code to enter for an AARP discount. For others, you may need to sign up for an online account and verify your age.
  • Are there discounts on property taxes or utilities? Yes! Many states and counties offer property tax exemptions or freezes for seniors. Likewise, many utility companies offer reduced rates for qualifying seniors. These aren’t store discounts, but they can be some of the biggest savers of all. Check with your local tax assessor’s office and your utility provider.
