Your Decision Checklist: Are You Ready to Move?

As you approach a final decision, review these questions one last time. Your honest answers will tell you if you are truly ready to take this exciting step.

Financial Readiness: Have you created a detailed, realistic budget for your new location, including taxes, insurance, utilities, and healthcare? Have you met with a financial advisor to understand the long-term impact on your retirement savings? Do you have a contingency fund for unexpected moving costs and repairs?

Healthcare Readiness: Have you thoroughly researched the Medicare options in your new location? Have you identified a new primary care physician and any necessary specialists who are in-network and accepting new patients? Do you have a plan for transferring your prescriptions and medical records?

Social Readiness: Do you have a concrete plan to build a social network outside of your family? Have you researched local clubs, volunteer opportunities, community centers, or hobby groups that align with your interests? Are you prepared to be proactive and step outside your comfort zone to meet new people?

Family Readiness: Have you had explicit conversations with your adult children about expectations for childcare, financial help, and personal boundaries? Does everyone have a clear and shared understanding of what your new role will be? Are you confident that you can maintain a healthy, respectful relationship with them as neighbors?

Logistical Readiness: Have you spent significant time in the new location, preferably during its least desirable season? Have you considered a long-term rental as a way to maintain flexibility? Have you thought about and discussed a potential “exit strategy” if the move does not work out for any reason?

If you can answer a confident “yes” to most of these questions, you are in a strong position to make a successful move. If you find yourself hesitating on several points, it may be a sign to slow down, do more research, or reconsider your plan.

Relocating to be near your grandchildren can be the adventure of a lifetime. It is an opportunity to pour love, wisdom, and support into your family in a way that creates a lasting legacy. By planning with your head as well as your heart, you can ensure this new chapter is one of joy, connection, and fulfillment for everyone involved. The goal is not just to be a resident in your grandchildren’s town, but to be the author of your own vibrant and purposeful retirement life.
