Jim, I don’t know about some of the cities here but as a former New Yorker who left NY when I retired, I can say that NYC deserves to be on this list. And since I left it has gotten worse. Yes, NY has great restaurants which I miss very much and fantastic cultural places like Museums and concert halls but the city is mostly dirty, crime is high, illegals are pouring in and the current political situation is drastic. Eric Adams has no place being in charge. NYC like many other cities need an experienced city manager who does not kowtow to bad political interest groups as Adams does. The people of NY do not deserve what they have and who stood by while the city went downhill? The voters of NYC did so its problems did not come from outer space.

While Portland Oregon used to be a nice quiet town. Efforts by the cities political leaders to make the area more cosmopolitin have left the police force woefully understaffed and many people who could have contributed to improvements have departed for places where petty crime and nightly shooting have made the place dangerous for senior citizens as well as others. Also street racing after dark where young people are offten injured make the general area generally unsafe for anyone who does not know their way around such dangerous rotating hot spots.
Very well written response. I chose to leave Seattle when I retired for those same reasons. I was assaulted twice in the last year that I lived there, and the police had been told not to charge vagrants with crimes because they wanted to be a sanctuary city for them. I was disappointed that the article didn’t indicate what the ranking was based on as some cities were identified as too expensive, others lacking health care, some lacked activities, and Memphis did have crime mentioned. The writer seemed to think that both Indianapolis and Memphis were near Tornado Alley in Oklahoma and Kansas, so I think it was just opinion based. I know I certainly didn’t leave Seattle for the weather. It is grey, but if you aren’t affected by SAD, then the weather is wonderful.

I love in Memphis and time has increased since the Police basically have their hands tied. This was right on point , Memphis being a terrible city to retire in. Poverty level is also a contributor to the problem. Older people have to hurry and do their business in the early hours and get back in.

Cost of living is a moot point for those who have no mortgae or debt… we get by easily on $3k a month in one of the most expensive areas in Oregon.
My wife and I are 69 and have everything covered including food for $2K per month in Great Falls, MT. We bank $1250 per month. No Sales tax, No Federal income tax, $27 MT State income tax with $45,740 retirement income. No debt is the key to a much better retirement.

Comfy 70’s. I have lived in the South, East, Midwest and North. I prefer warm days but not in the 90’s or 100’s which I have experience moving around. I was raised in Mn. But it can get dreary in the winter. Unlike the South we can have hot days but get relief after a week and I like that part.

I’ve been to a lot of different cities in our country and none offer the beauty and diversity of things to do in such a small proximity from Seattle. It’s beautiful and 80 today, been that way for the past month. Sure the winters can be gray but it’s 45-50 most days, very tolerable considering conditions others face. People complain because they think they should have Detroit or Cleveland or Dallas prices, to them I say you get what you pay for.

Agreed. Portland when I was “growing up” (let’s say like the 90’s and early 2000’s) was sooo beautiful. A vibrant clean little “big city” that was always full of people just out walking to all their destinations. And in rain or shine I might add. Just full of life! Not so much now. But I recently went back to Eugene and it hasn’t changed a bit(maybe ever lol). Good place to retire in my mind. Up in the hills and then come down when school is out hahaha. GO DUCKS! 🦆
While I agree Portland has changed over the past 6 years as far as crime rate goes Portland ranks 21st among large cities. You’ll find drag racing, shootings, cars thefts in every large city of Portlands size.

The estimate of $2000 for a one-bedroom in downtown LA also seems low to me. And downtown—Yuk! I lived there from 2017 to 2019, so I have a pretty good idea. It’s great for bars and restaurants, but the scarcity of supermarkets and everyday services, not to mention the incredibly crappy system of public transport, means you will still be car-dependent even in that very dense area. And when you factor in the enormous homeless population, it can be quite scary. That said, living in LA can be wonderful if you choose the right neighborhood—preferably very close to your work so that time spent in the notoriously horrifying traffic jams will be minimal. It will cost you BIG, but there’s no other place like it.

You can get a 2 bedroom apartment for $2500 in New York City. You have to look of course, and it won’t be on Park Avenue in Manhattan. There are Landlords who rather make a little less each month and have a steady paying reliable tenant, then charge the highest market rate and have a tenant struggling to make his monthly payment, and habitually late each month.
I’ve lived in Sacramento Ca for 45 yrs and have retired here. Too late to move anywhere else, and my family is all here, so I wouldn’t want to move. Crime is terrible, but it’s everywhere. There are a lot of homeless, but that’s everywhere in California. I enjoy my life here. I’m settled and our home is paid off, so I can’t complain.

I was born and raised in the country in central Louisiana. The US Army stationed me at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn when I was 17(in 1962). There was one tower up to build the Verrazano Bridge on 12/01/1962. After three years in the military I chose to live in Bay Ridge for another 12 years. I love New York City, especially Bay Ridge. I moved back to my home state in 1977 for a job. I still love New York City and I always will. There is no other place like it. Yes, I have been back to visit and had a great time.

People retire to various cities for many reasons, low taxes are probably at the bottom of the list.
Some of the information is correct, I am sure, but some incorrect as well. Kansas and Louisiana are in tornado alley, Indianapolis is not included. I have visited or lived in each of the cites listed as worst to retire to. In each of these if you are already there and love it, plus have the means to live comfortably, I say stay!

Move to the Kansas side of Kansas City. Its wonderful. Sure you have the 4 seasons but they aren’t really that bad except for the awful humidity in the summer. The cost of living is very inexpensive here. I have moved away to 4 different cities in the U.S. and have always moved back to KC.

Have the authors of such lists determined that since so little effort does truly elicit major reader responses – in rebuttal, support of, or alternatives – to the list, that WE THE PEOPLE should be shorted of our “to round out” last two cities of the list? Any list ranking the best/worst of any topic will devolve into a discussion of un-satisfactory results for the few, and possibly a great sigh of relief for the many not impacted geographically. NYC has excellent public transportation and health care services and cultural events and attractions too numerous to name and is served by three major airports and social security benefits are not taxed property taxes are not high and groceries are not taxed unlike some southern states
California has got to be the worst place to retire expense wise. This state is a Democratic state so they allow the homeless to do whatever they want. You can rob from the stores and the police won’t do anything as long as what you take is under $900.00! Gas is over $5.00 a gallon and going up every week. Real estate is un touchable unless you have at least 2 million to spend. The Traffic is the worst in the Nation food is very expensive and our governor is a NAZI !!! The state is no longer a beautiful place to live like it was back in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s. The only thing California has to offer you is the weather it is the best in the country but that’s about it!

When you have millions of people who don’t/wont work, the infrastructure of EVERYTHING collapses Babies, the elderly, the crippled…need public services and assistance. However, I have personally met a dozen or so “baby daddies” who have 5-25 babies with women on welfare, then get money, food and shelter from the ignorant women who have the babies. These people are quite proud of themselves for cheating the government and for preying on needy hapless, hopeless women. I worked in a Domestic Violence Center in Texas these men were constant clients. Arresting them for domestic violence doesn’t stop them. There’s another needy woman right around the corner. I grew sickened by the thought-system of these men and resigned from that job. There’s no helping them and the children are the real victims. I thought it was bad in Georgia, but Texas was so much worse. Pay attention! Billions of dollars are being siphoned off of tax dollars by low level crooks and criminals. Cost of living for retirees has become tough in recent years in The USA. A lot of retirees are actually moving overseas, in Countries where the cost of living is more favorable to their income. I live in Florida, the once Mecca for retirees; but under republican government control for the past six to eight years, it has become really expensive to live. The cost of Condos Monthly Maintenance Fee has gone UP astronomical, in relation to retirees income. Entertainments costs, eg. movies, theaters, baseball and basketball games and visits to Disneyland are are almost prohibited. A lot of Floridians are ACTUALLY moving OUT to other less expensive States. It is real shame. Most businesses have become MONEY-GATORS!! And the Insurance Companies are leading the pack!! MERCESSLY!! Gotta go along with TempestJ. I’ve lived in NYC nearly all my adult life. It’s been at least 25 years since $2500 was the rate for a 2 b drool apartment. Try $5-8,000 or more a month. These days you’d be lucky to find a studio for $2500.
Left out San Francisco and Paris, France.
Whoever wrote this article hasn’t been to NYC in a long time, apparently. A 2 bedroom for $2500? In what decade?? A one bedroom is at least $5500. But if you’re in a rent controlled apartment, living in the city is a blast, especially for older people. Lots to do and always an interesting place to live in. Keep your red states, blue states love us older folks.
I’ve been around a long time, and want those of you that contributed here to know that I am amazed at how many of you simply told us readers what you believed, not trying to come across as an expert….although some of you are certainly educated in policies and politics. Thank you. I found some good information from many of the comments here. It’s great to live in a country where we have opportunities like this to express ourselves without negative consequences.
I was born in Memphis and lived there for 12 years. Then we moved out into an
unincorporated area next to Memphis for 14 years. Then I and my family moved to
an area just outside the city limits. After my divorce my girlfriend and I lived in
East Memphis for 12 years. We left Memphis for Wilmington, NC (a little Memphis)
for 5 Years. Then we moved to the Atlanta, GA area (suburbs) for nearly ten years. Then,
she retired and we left the Atlanta area and returned to the Memphis area, but decided
not to move to Memphis and bought a house in North Mississippi in an unincorporated
area. We rarely venture up into Memphis, where the news media report one or two
shootings on a nearly nightly basis. Here, most people carry a concealed weapon.
However, a shooting is rarely reported down here in an area that percentage-wise
has more gun owners than in Memphis. We hear gunfire all the time. However, it
is usually people shooting at skeet or other targets. I think that is because the
criminals in Memphis know they are likely to experience return fire – with effect and
an arrest. …. and we are referred as the HICKS!!
The second comment in this message is true about the mayor. Much ado was made when
he took down the statues of Andrew Jackson, one of the founders of the city, and other white
historical figures, ciiting racism. One would think, in view of recent events, that he is pro crime since black-on-black crime is the norm in Memphis. The police department is hurting for new employees with little success’ It is no wonder that many people are leaving the city area
for the suburbs and neighboring states. We can go for months and not go to Memphis,
or feel the need to.
I have no idea how OLD this list it, the rents are about half of actual current rents. NY NY studio apt anywhere near a business district, be luck to find under $3500. Downtown LA one bedroom, $4000. Just had a young sales guy move to WA, near Seattle, not IN Seattle, one bdrm $2900, view of a brick wall
The comment about New York’s “unstable” weather – from blizzards to heat waves – was risible in its stupidity. I can’t ever remember the last time there was a genuine blizzard in NYC. Most of the winters are mild for the latitude, with little snowfall. As for the “heat waves” if NYC summers are a problem then you can just rule out any place south of 40N!
