Understanding Part B: Medical Insurance

For 2026, the standard monthly premium for Part B will increase to $202.90, up $17.90 from 2025. The annual deductible will rise to $283, up from $257. Part B covers a wide range of services, including doctor visits, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, and many preventive services.

Once you meet your deductible, you generally pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for covered services, known as coinsurance.

High-income beneficiaries should be aware of the IRMAA surcharge, which shifts a larger portion of Part B costs back to the individual. In 2026, if your 2024 income exceeds $109,000 for single filers or $218,000 for married couples filing jointly, you will pay an additional monthly surcharge ranging from $81.10 to $486.50.

The Social Security Administration recalculates IRMAA every year based on your most recent tax return, so your surcharge can change annually.
