The Part-Time Job Search: How to Write a Resume for a Retirement Gig

Sample Resume Walkthrough: From Corporate Manager to Bookstore Clerk

Let’s put all this theory into practice with a detailed example. Meet David, a 65-year-old who recently retired from a 30-year career as a Marketing Director for a large software company. He and his wife sold their large home in the suburbs and moved to a smaller, more walkable town known for its vibrant arts scene. David doesn’t need the money, but he’s a lifelong book lover and thinks working 15-20 hours a week at the beloved local independent bookstore, “The Reading Nook,” would be the perfect way to meet people and stay engaged. His old resume is four pages long and full of corporate jargon about market penetration, ROI, and B2B campaign strategy. It will get him nowhere.

Here’s how David transforms his resume for this new chapter. This is a great `sample resume for a semi-retired professional` that you can adapt for your own `job searching`.

David’s “Before” Resume Snippets

Objective: To leverage 30+ years of marketing leadership experience in a challenging new role.

Experience: Vice President of Marketing, TechSolutions Inc., 1998-2023. Spearheaded global marketing initiatives with a $15M budget, increasing market share by 25% over 5 years. Managed a team of 45 marketing professionals across three continents.

This is impressive, but it’s also intimidating and irrelevant for a bookstore clerk position. The owner of The Reading Nook might think, “This guy is overqualified and will be bored in a week,” or “He’ll try to tell me how to run my business.”

Notice the transformation. David’s summary immediately states his intentions and passion. He translated his high-level skills into tangible, relevant ones for the bookstore. “Managing a $15M budget” became “Assisted in managing the departmental budget.” “Spearheading global initiatives” became “Coordinated and promoted events.” He is telling the exact story the bookstore owner needs to hear: he is reliable, skilled in relevant areas, and genuinely wants to be there. This is `how to write a resume for a part-time job` effectively.
