State Tax Refund Delays in 2026: Why Some Americans Are Still Waiting for Their Money

Identity Verification Is Also Slowing Refunds

States are also taking extra steps to prevent tax identity theft and fraud. Many returns that trigger warning flags—such as large credits or unusual deductions—may be placed under manual review before refunds are issued.

In some cases, taxpayers may receive letters asking them to verify their identity before their refund is released. Although these steps can slow processing, officials say they are necessary to protect taxpayers from fraud.
