5 Things EVERY Retiree Must Know About Nursing Homes

You cannot only rely on nursing homes.

Whether you are looking at a short-term stay in a nursing home or a longer-term stay, you should not believe that nursing homes will take care of everything and that families are excluded from the picture. A big thing that researchers and professors specializing in Aging Studies focus on is the fact that residents’ families are essential.

If you are looking for a nursing home for a loved one, know that these facilities cannot prevent you from being there with the future resident. What’s more, having a family caregiver with the person may make the transition to the nursing home easier, as these facilities are made to be the home for a shorter or longer period.

Sometimes it happens that you are living far away from your family or that family help is not an option for you. Do not worry, as there are a lot of people in the same situation as you in nursing homes. However, you should not just leave it at that but rather look into getting a life care or geriatric manager. They are social workers or licensed nurses who will act like your “professional relative” and help you out.

For more information, you can access the government site of the National Institute on Aging.

Sometimes it is not about needing to rely on nursing homes for a while, but rather that someone you love needs assisted living. To find out if your hunch is right, make sure you read more about all the subtle signs your loved one needs assisted living here!
