8. Fort Wayne, Indiana

Last on the list is another great and affordable destination for retirement. There are numerous things to do in Fort Wayne and Allen County, including meandering rivers, tranquil woodlands, and 100 miles of bike, hiking, and kayaking paths. Fort Wayne enjoys an excellent location in the Midwest, close to a few significant cities.

The distance between the city and Indianapolis is 125 miles, whereas Chicago and Detroit are roughly 160 miles away. With 50 miles of trails, Indiana Dunes National Park is around 115 miles away and hugs 15 miles of Lake Michigan’s southern side.
Fort Wayne is a desirable location due to its affordable housing market. Retirees can purchase a large property and still have money left over for other retirement expenses because the median price is far lower than the national average.

Furthermore, Purdue University’s Senior Scholars program allows seniors (60 and over) to audit programs for free at the Fort Wayne campus. Isn’t that awesome?
When it comes to taxes, because after all, this is what stresses us the most, Indiana allows limited tax exemptions for federal civil service pensions and Social Security benefits, but income from IRAs, 401(k) plans, and private pensions is completely taxable. When compared to taxes in other states, the state’s property and sales taxes are average.
