2. Winston-Salem, North Carolina

This city is one amazing affordable place to live in! The median home price in Winston-Salem is $261,200, and if you have a good budget, you can buy a pretty amazing house for $400,000. If you are interested in the arts and culture, Winston-Salem is the perfect place for you.

About ten years ago, university and municipal leaders collaborated to develop the 330-acre Innovation Quarter in downtown Winston-Salem. They did this by refurbishing old factories, luring in new businesses, and transforming the region into a hub for innovation, the arts, and entertainment. And that’s not even half of what this city can offer! In downtown, there is a huge theater from 1929 that was restored a couple of years ago, and it offers plenty of nice performances almost weekly.

If you’re ready for some “challenges” during your retirement years and you want to have a new hobby or simply start something new, you can take classes at the Sawtooth School for Visual Art, or if inside yourself lies an old rocker, you can take adult guitar lessons at Salem College’s Community Music School.

Those who would rather spend their golden years hiking or riding a bike, five miles away from downtown, it has a 1,100-acre park that offers a golf course, camping, and mountain biking. Besides the fact that Winston-Salem is an amazing and affordable city for retirees, it is also a place where you can have fun and find plenty of nice activities to do during the day.

Because we know that health care is very important for the elderly, there are seven hospitals in Winston-Salem with great medical personnel. Furthermore, this state doesn’t tax Social Security benefits and the property taxes are pretty low compared to other states.

If you want an affordable place for your retirement, come to Winston-Salem. You won’t regret it!
