James Tolkan had the kind of face you didn’t forget and a delivery that could cut through any scene. To a whole generation of moviegoers, he will always be Mr. Strickland, the bald, gravel-voiced principal in Back to the Future who labeled Marty McFly a “slacker” in 1985 and somehow turned the line into an instant catchphrase. The role brought him into living rooms and family movie nights for decades to come.

His career stretched far beyond Hill Valley. He played the no-nonsense flight commander Stinger in Top Gun, an FBI agent in WarGames, and Detective Lubic in Masters of the Universe. Even with a busy film résumé, he never lost his love for the New York stage, where his career first began. James Tolkan passed away at the age of 94, having spent decades giving moviegoers exactly the kind of stern, slightly amused authority figure they remembered from their own school days.
