What Is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?
SSI is a federal assistance program that provides monthly payments to individuals with limited income and resources who are:
- Age 65 or older
- Blind
- Disabled
Children with qualifying disabilities may also receive SSI.
For 2026, adults eligible for SSI generally must have monthly income only from wages below $2,073 (or unearned income below $1,014 for an individual), though eligibility depends on living arrangements and resource limits. In 2027, the maximum federal SSI payment rises to $1,029 per month for an individual and $1,544 for an eligible couple.
How to Apply for SSI
Applications can be started:
- Online through the SSA website
- In person at a local Social Security office
- By phone at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time
I am 93 years old DOB 10/06/1932, with prostate cancer, and my SS has been reduced…why?
