The Price Tag: Over $1 Trillion
The math behind the promise is enormous. The U.S. Census Bureau puts the adult citizen population at somewhere around 240 to 270 million people, depending on which estimate is used. At $5,000 per person, that puts the total cost of the plan between roughly $1.2 trillion and $1.35 trillion — a figure that dwarfs almost every previous direct-payment program in U.S. history, including the COVID-era stimulus checks.
NBC News’s chief White House correspondent, Garrett Haake, did the math live on social media shortly after the speech, noting that with an estimated 269 million American adults, sending everyone a $5,000 check would cost the government $1.35 trillion, and that he had asked the White House where that money would come from without getting an answer.
That price tag lands at an awkward moment for the administration. The federal deficit topped roughly $1.8 trillion in fiscal 2025, and economists warn that financing a payment of this size — without offsetting spending cuts or new revenue — would very likely widen the deficit further and add fresh inflationary pressure, echoing warnings raised after the 2020 and 2021 stimulus rounds.
