Before You Get Excited About That $5,000 Check Trump Just Promised, Read This

This Isn’t the First “Dividend” Promise

Wednesday’s pledge follows a strikingly similar, and ultimately unfulfilled, promise from just months earlier. In November, Trump announced on Truth Social that Americans earning below a certain income threshold would receive a $2,000 “tariff dividend,” funded by revenue from his tariff program. At the time, Tax Foundation economist Erica York estimated that limiting the payments to people earning $100,000 or less would still cover about 150 million Americans and cost roughly $300 billion — an amount that already exceeded a full year of tariff collections on its own. York noted that a dollar of tariff revenue offsets only about 24 cents of income and payroll tax revenue, meaning the fiscal math behind a tariff-funded dividend was shaky well before this new $5,000 figure entered the picture.

That $2,000 proposal also ran into a legal buzzsaw: it arrived just days after the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments over whether Trump had the constitutional authority to impose many of his tariffs in the first place. Prediction markets reflected deep skepticism at the time, with traders on platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket pricing the odds of Court approval in the 20-percent range. Those same markets, tracking whether the earlier $2,000 dividend would ever actually be paid out, saw their confidence collapse from about 14 percent to roughly 3 percent within a single week. As of this week, no American has received a DOGE- or tariff-funded dividend check of any kind.
