Why the Timing Matters
The proposal lands as Trump’s approval ratings sit at some of the lowest points of his second term, with recent polling showing a majority of Americans disapproving of his handling of the economy specifically — the same issue his party lost ground on in off-year elections just months earlier. Voters heading into the midterms have consistently ranked the cost of living as a top concern, which is likely part of why the administration keeps returning to the idea of a large, direct cash payment rather than smaller, incremental relief measures.
That same cost-of-living anxiety, however, is also what makes economists nervous about the plan on the merits. A payment large enough to meaningfully move the needle for individual households is also large enough, distributed all at once to hundreds of millions of people, to push prices higher in the process — the same dynamic that played out after pandemic-era stimulus checks were distributed in 2020 and 2021.

Although I do get a little impatient with President Trump, the fact remains that he loves this great country and has restored the respect and dignity that we deserve as the greatest country on the planet! Thank you President Trump for all that you do for us and for once giving the American people back a little bit of our hard earned money! $5,000 dollars will give us the opportunity to have a better Thanksgiving and Christmas!
