9 States to Live on Your Social Security Check Alone

2. South Dakota

Moving forward, the next state on our list, the neighbor from above, South Dakota, is another state where the cost of living is pretty decent for seniors, especially for those who plan on living on Social Security only. If you want to relocate to South Dakota, you should know that both renting and buying an apartment are quite affordable.

For example, a friend of mine relocated there last year, and he is paying only $750 for rent. Depending on your demands, a one-bedroom apartment in South Dakota is about $300 less expensive than one in another state. In the past few years, this destination has attracted more seniors than ever! A recent study showed that at the beginning of 2023, almost 17% of the state’s population was made up of retirees.
